Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance to we need to book?

During peak times (approx. Dec.-March), booking 3-5 days ahead is not a bad idea if you want a specific type of room. At other times of the year, one day's notice is usually sufficient, except during local festivals.

What is your cancellation policy?
If you make a confirmed booking, you are not simply taking an option, you are entering into an agreement to pay for that accommodation. An administration fee of $10 will be charged for all cancelled confirmed bookings. If less than 24 hours' notice is given, we will charge full price for the bookings made, unless we can sell on the reservation requested.. A booking is not confirmed until credit card details have been received, or some other form of full payment made. Put simply, if you want to avoid cancellation fees, don't make a booking until you're sure you need it!

We are on a tight budget. Are you the cheapest Backpackers in town?

We don't try to be the cheapest, but we do try to be the best value, and the best everything else!

We have heavy packs. Do you do pickups?

If you are using Public transport to get to Greymouth, we recommend Atomic Shuttles, who will drop you at the door of Global Village, and pick you up again when you are ready to leave. Not only that, they are also excellent value. Arriving by train or Intercity, you will have a 15-20 minute walk to Global Village, or a $4 taxi fare. If you are happily travelling with Kiwi Experience or Magic, you'll probably be happier at one of the "bus" hostels in the town centre, that they will take you to.If you need a break from the "Bus crowd" your driver may drop you off here, if he/she's a nice bloke, otherwise it's a 10 minute walk. Remember, the best travel experiences usually come with a little effort, and a bit of exercise never hurt anybody.................. So, if you need to make that little extra effort to get here, do it, you'll be glad you did! And do you really need all that stuff you're carrying anyway? Oh yes, the answer's no.

Do you take children?

Global Village is not suitable for those travelling with young children. Minimum age is 13.

When is the reception desk open?

Reception is open daily from 9:00-11:30am, 1:30-2:00pm, and 5:00-8:30pm.

Reception is open until 8:30 pm. Later check-in is possible but should be arranged in advance.

What time is checkout?

Checkout time from your room is 10:00 am, but you are welcome to use the hostel's other facilities until up to 2pm. If you're nice.

Do you have single sex dorms?

Yes. See our "booking info" page for details.

Do you have ensuite bathrooms?

Get over it. Our bathrooms are amazing, plentiful, single sex,and you will love them, (they even have hairdryers) but they're not in your room!

Are there spas in every room?

Yeah right!! And you're from which planet?

Is breakfast included?

No. But all items for a healthy nutritious start to the day, can be purchased at reception. {Coke, the drink that is, and chocolate also available for that instant morning hit}

Do we need sleeping bags?

We provide fully made-up beds, complete with fresh linen & cozy duvets. The use of sleeping bags is not permitted in our hostel.

How do I get there?

See the 'how to get here' section of the 'Greymouth' page for public transport options.

If driving, Global Village is situated 1km south of Greymouth town centre. From the south on SH6, turn left off SH6 at the Mobil service station/New World supermarket, then right, this is Cowper St. We are 400mtrs along on left. From the north, continue on SH6 bypassing main town centre, turn right into Franklin Street, just after fire station, then left onto Cowper Street. We are 200mtrs along on right. And we have plenty of safe off -street parking.

I hear it always rain in Greymouth?

Don't believe everything you hear. Greymouth has as many sunny days as Christchurch, or Auckland. Just when it rains, it can really rain! Which is why we have such stunning rainforest!

When is the best time to visit?

Anytime. Summer is great, and busy. Winter is great, and quieter, and because it's quieter we are able to give you four nights for the price of three between April and September.

Is it true that you're New Zealand's best backpacker hostel?

Yes, and don't forget to tell your friends too.
